Sustainable Livelihoods
How do the development programmes introduced in rural areas ensure that their benefits are essentially reaching where they are actually required? This is only possible through taking a differentiated understanding of the people (men, women in different roles) living in that area. IC has made an effective and practical use of the adapted version of Sustainable Livelihoods Framework. The framework explores: which assets are available to which people, in which form; what are their present livelihood strategies; what are the existing potentials that can be capitalized to improve livelihoods; and which vulnerabilities exist that need to be addressed to safeguard existing livelihood.
In the project for Livelihood Improvement (PLI: 2003-2007) in Dera Ismail Khan (D.I Khan), the household typology was introduced halfway through the project’s first phase. It assisted the project staff and its NGO partners in gaining more insights into the dynamics of the different households and their livelihoods, to refine indicators to monitor change and to check whether or not their activities were inclusive of and focused on the poorest households. The Livelihoods Programme of IC not only is capitalizing on this learning and applying this approach, but is also further fine tuning the tools on a large scale including six districts.
